Fragrance
Fragrances can awaken good feelings and great memories but the chemical ones can also make you ill.
On the top 15 hit list of allergy creating substances, chemical fragrances are in second place.
To date about 3,500 chemical substances are used in various combinations in beauty products in Europe and the United Kingdom alone and at least as many in the United States.
Chemical fragrances do not contribute to the positive, nurturing effect of skincare products. On the one hand fragrances are used to conceal the often unpleasant odour of raw materials and on the other to stimulate the buying impulses of the consumer. The negative consequences of the use of fragrances in skincare are often ignored, resulting in their large contribution to the increase in allergic reactions to beauty products. Too many allergenic substances are utilized in the cosmetic industry and the use of fragrance is one of the major causes of allergies, dermatitis and premature aging.
Scientific research has clearly indicated which substances in cosmetic products are the likely causes of allergic reactions and which substances definitely cause frequent and harmful allergic reactions. Unfortunately these substances are the exact ones consistently used by the cosmetic industry. If these substances penetrate the upper layers of the skin and they do the increasing number of allergic reactions should come as no surprise to anyone.
Even if a product that contains chemical fragrances have been tolerated for a long time, the process of disease in the skin may already have begun. Therefore the continuous use of a certain fragranced product may have already initiated the development of an allergic disease in the skin while the product appears to have been tolerated as no signs of irritation were apparent.
The consequence of these facts should be to never use allergenic fragrances in cosmetic products. In this way one could ensure that one would be in the right direction to achieve the best possible skin compatibility for as many people as possible. Many companies tend to avoid the “skin compatible” approach to fragrance as it requires highly sophisticated and expensive research to develop a neutral or pleasant fragrance that does not rely on chemical ingredients.
Because many of the cosmetic companies are extremely influential this issue is rarely discussed in the open and even though cosmetic companies are obliged to print ingredient lists on their products, allergy sufferers are not safer as these fragrance and aroma ingredients can be comprised of 300 components that only need to be registered as “perfume” “fragrance” or “aroma” and we the consumer are still no wiser or safer.
Please remember that:
- Every substance recognized by the immune system as “foreign” to the body can cause an allergy.
- Every substance has a different allergic potential.
- Chemical preservatives and fragrances are the two main causes of allergic reactions to cosmetics.
- It can therefore never be justified to apply chemical fragrances to ones skin.
- Skin Allergies are a long life disease that is not curable. It can only be controlled.
- Children inherit allergies from their mothers. The obvious conclusion is to avoid any products containing chemical fragrances.
